I am SO SMITTEN with this idea. Little Free Libraries, which I just read about on the etsy blog and couldn't resist posting here, is one of those ideas that's so charming it makes me really happy and kinda jealous that it wasn't my idea all at the same time. Do you know what I'm talking about??

The premise is to take a book, leave a book. It's all free, and it's all in the name of sharing books and building community. You can build your own free library and then register it on the Little Free Library website, and then you'll be put on their map of locations! I just looked to see if there are some Little Free Libraries in Portland, and there are!! But not in my neighborhood-- I'm so inspired by this idea, I think I might see if Ryan wants to build one with me to put in our front yard! Doesn't that sound fun? I see lots of people walking and biking by, so I bet it would get some action.

Mine would be bright and colorful, of course. Ooooh, can't you just picture the fun I could have decorating a little mini house?? It might take some convincing to get Ryan to help me, since he's starting his residency and will be working about a million hours a week now, but I bet I can do it. He likes making things. :)

Are you inspired by this idea like I am? Would you put a little free library in your yard??

As a librarian (and someone who sometimes still curls up with a real book) I totally support this idea. So cute! Please post pics if you and Ryan decide to do this. :-)

Ooooh, Emilie posted a picture on FB of one that she walked by in her neighborhood. These are so cute!

What a wonderful idea! We've got a small neighborhood park. I'm wondering if the city would let us put a little library next to one of the benches? Will post a pic if it happens!

I love the Little Libraries! We live in Madison, WI, and there are SO many around! In fact, we were going to put one in our yard, but there are literally 3 others within 3 blocks of our house, so we thought it'd be overkill. My daughter loves picking out
books on our walks and we save all of her old books to donate to them back into the community! I can't wait to see what you come up with - I'm sure it will be wonderful, just like you!

I am SO going to do this!! We live on a busy street with a sidewalk where many people walk. They are so many different types of people walking each day for a variety of reasons. I never let my kids go in the front yard (for the fear of traffic and strangers.)
And, our mailbox is a slot in our front door. So, what a wonderful and fun reason to walk to the street together each day! It would be a thrill for my 6 and 8 year old! The only other one like this I've seen is a cart in our local library. I've used it but
keep forgetting to bring books back to place there. This is a great way to keep the giving going. -- I'm going to hit my handy husband up to help this weekend! Thanks for sharing Jessica!
