{'time machine' is a series where I share some old work from over the years as a working artist... it's a fun reminder for me about how far I've come in my little business, and I hope you enjoy the images!}

You guys. This is the first-ever successful repeat pattern that I ever created, way back in 2008! It's fun to look back and this and see how my work has evolved since then.

I toiled for months trying to teach myself how to use Illustrator on my teeny laptop, and then once I'd acquired enough basic skills, to muddle may way through this tutorial for how to create a repeating pattern.

I remember the feeling of success that surged through my body, and then the obsession that quickly ensued. I created this pattern in July (I think) 2008 and then made as many new patterns as I could before January 2009, because I'd decided to exhibit at Printsource.

Looking back, I realize how far from ready I was for a trade show at that point, but I've always liked to just jump in whole hog and figure things out as I go. I learned a ton at that show!

I'm thinking about creating an online 'how to create repeat patterns' course sometime in 2013.... is this something that you'd be interested in? I'd love to hear your thoughts about what you'd specifically like to learn from me. Shoot me an email if you have some suggestions/questions/requests!

You're such an inspiration. Go girl, go! I am sure that a course like that would be well received! A great resource for making patterns is also this book: A field guide to fabric design by Kimberly Kight. Aren't you quoted in that book too? And I love your first pattern, so cute and I can see the spark that's visible in all of your patterns in there too.

A course on repeats sounds awesome! I love seeing where it started for you and I have also used that tutorial to get a tossed repeat to work.
