a curious thing happened to me last week (and it involves Lady Gaga)

Lady Gaga. She's over the top, yes? Her outfits are craaaaaazy, and I don't think anyone can argue with that!

So the curious thing that happened is this. My husband recently added some Lady Gaga to his music collection, for which I laughed at him and told him he was lame. (Keep in mind, I'd never listened to Lady Gaga, I'd only made completely snap judgements about her clothing and how she presents herself in public. Like why doesn't she just wear some pants already? Who doesn't wear pants?? Yep, I'm judgmental, I admit it. I'm working on it.) :)

So Ryan, my husband, and I share our iTunes libraries between our computers, and as I was adding some Kings of Leon from his library onto my iPod, I somehow put some Lady Gaga songs on there as well without noticing. Fast forward to the next day at the gym. I notice the songs on my iPod, wonder how they got there, and figure I might as well at least give it a listen to see what all the hooha is all about over this Lady Gaga character.

And holy moly, I'm obsessed. Full on obsessed. I'm telling you, this has me thinking twice now about my snap judgements of people and things, because all of a sudden I love Lady Gaga and I think she's AWESOME. This is pretty much a complete 180 from how I felt about her last week. I've even gone so far as to read her wikipedia page and learn more about her. Do you know she's only 23? Wow.

While I'm super psyched that I started listening to her music and now it's my favorite thing to work out to (oh, and paint to... and I imagine I might like to clean my house to it, too-- it gets me all pumped up!), I'm also really excited that I had a glimpse into how my judgements of something are quite possibly not true at all. This is mind-blowing! What else am I casting off as "lame" or "boring" or whatever that I could potentially LOVE?

It also reminds me of something I read in The Magic of Thinking Big last night (which is a great book, by the way, and I highly recommend it)-- the author talks about how it's easy to get interested in anything if you just dig a little deeper into it, and he says it's especially useful with things you think you're not interested in. He talks about, for example, bumblebees. It's probably quite easy to take bumblebees for granted or think there's nothing too interesting about them, but when you start to learn about them you'll uncover some fascinating little creatures. I discovered a fascinating little creature in Lady Gaga last week, and my life is a little more interesting for it, I think.

What are you dismissing on a snap judgement that might just be worth digging a little deeper into?

I have her in my ears right now - & I'm actually dancing in my seat a little. Like you, I made a snap judgment - at first, last year - & then I read in January that she became the creative director of Polaroid - I have been reading/hearing, how awesome she is... been meaning to listen to her - this post just pushed me over :)

Totally digging her.

Thank you!

Oh I know the feeling...sometimes I purposefully ignore the "popular" stuff because I assume it's all fluff. But when I open up a bit I find there's a lot of good stuff out there - maybe it's popular for a reason! Also sometimes even fluff is good too. Hehe...

Jess, I don't know if this has crossed your mind but, um, she is totally one of your illustrations in the flesh. Sooner or later you were bound to love her!
